100 Million Year-Old Stomatopod

I can’t believe this is only my first blog entry about stomatopods since I got my account here.  Everybody who knows me knows that I’m obsessed with them.  Everybody who’s ever owned one also knows why.

Anyway, Dr. Roy Caldwell from the University of California, Berkeley has generously posted a photograph of his own fossil stomatopod dating from the Cretaceous Period.  It’s unbelievably well-preserved and similar to the modern genus Hemisquilla of Blue Planet fame, which is also quite primitive.
